Google Call Recording launches on more Pixel phones
What’s New
Google has started rolling out a native Call Recording feature in its Pixel 6 and newer devices (for those that don’t include its AI Call Notes feature) via its “Phone by Google” app.
The feature allows manual recording of calls and automatic recording for selected numbers or non-contacts.
Users can choose how long recordings are retained (7, 14, 30 days) or keep them indefinitely.
-
The recordings are local to the device, not inherently cloud-uploaded by Google.
Device & Software Requirements
-
Supported on Pixel models: Pixel 6 and newer, running Android 14 or later.
For non-Pixel devices running the Phone by Google app, Android 9 or newer may suffice in some cases.
Requires updating the “Phone by Google” app (version ~198+ noted) and the latest system update (“November Pixel Drop”) for full availability.
Why It Matters
-
Many Android users have long asked for built-in call recording without relying on sketchy third-party apps. This feature answers that demand.
-
For Pixel users not getting the latest AI “Call Notes” functionality (which transcribes and summarises calls), this gives a more basic but practical recording capability.
-
From a competitive standpoint, it helps Google keep Pixel phones relevant in markets where recording calls is valued.
-
On the flip side, it’s also about regulatory compliance — Google includes audible prompts / messages to inform all parties that a call is being recorded.
Important Limitations & Considerations
-
Availability varies by region. Local laws on call-recording differ (one-party consent vs two-party consent), so Google may restrict or delay availability in some countries
If you’re already on a Pixel 9 or Pixel 10 (which support Google’s AI-powered “Call Notes”), you may not see this standard recording feature (or it may be redundant).
Just because you have a supported model + software doesn’t guarantee the feature is live in your region yet — rollout is gradual.
-
Recording calls comes with legal responsibilities. Even though Google builds in prompts and options, you’ll need to ensure you’re compliant with local laws before capturing conversations.
How to Use It (Step-by-Step)
-
Update your system software (make sure you have the November feature drop or equivalent).
-
Update the Phone by Google app to the latest version.
-
Open Phone app → Settings → Call Assist → Call Recording.
Enable the feature. You’ll be prompted to download “audio files” or notices that will play to each call participant.
Choose your setting: manual recording, automatic for non-contacts, automatic for specific numbers, etc.
-
Set retention policy: delete after 7/14/30 days, or keep indefinitely.
-
On calls, you should see a “Record” button (and red indicator) when recording is active.
Bottom line: If you’re using a Pixel 6 or newer and you’ve kept your software current, you’re finally getting a legit built-in call-recording tool from Google. Just check if your region supports it, flip the switch, and you’re good to go.
